Life before Teesside High School
I grew up in the Yarm and Eaglescliffe area before moving to Leeds to study Design Technology in Primary and Secondary Education. Following my degree study, I returned home to Eaglescliffe and completed a PGCE at Sunderland University. For the past 16 years I have enjoyed working at St Michael’s Catholic Academy in Billingham, where I taught a full range of Design Technology and Art subjects.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
When introducing students to new techniques and equipment, I love to be able to share the excitement, awe and wonder they experience. The subjects I teach provide so many opportunities for students to really shine, especially as they complete their products. The sense of achievement and pride they display is incredibly rewarding to witness.
What do you enjoy most about Teesside High School?
Since the first day I came to look around Teesside High School, I have felt incredibly welcomed and supported by everyone. There is a true sense of purpose and cohesion amongst staff and students alike. The small class sizes allow for the nurture that’s necessary for individuals to reach their full potential. I enjoy the variety of extra-curricular opportunities available and no one day is the same.
What is your favourite time of the year?
Autumn is definitely my favourite! I don’t think you can beat the fresh and positive vibes at the start of a new school year. The run up to Christmas brings lots to look forward to, on both my school, and family calendar. I appreciate the beautiful colours in the trees and the crisp, cold mornings. It’s a time of year I associate with new beginnings, as both of my children were born in the autumn.
What do others say about you?
I’d like to think they would say I am caring and supportive of those around me. I am often referred to as a bit of a ‘mother hen’ by friends and family.
