Teesside High School pupils to climb Ben Nevis for Children in Need

Students at Teesside High School are organising a fundraising challenge with a difference as they overcome Covid restrictions to raise crucial funds for Children in Need.

In their year group and class ‘bubbles’, pupils have been thinking creatively about how to raise money as part of the school’s annual Children in Need Day on Friday 13 November.

As well as a sponsored silence, comedy show, non-uniform day and merchandise stalls, one form group has decided to climb the equivalent height to the top of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest peak.

The Year 8 students have calculated they would need to climb 8,810 steps to achieve their feat, a combined 440 trips of the staircase to their Computing classroom!

The group will start their challenge on Tuesday and aim to ‘reach the summit’ by Friday, with sponsorship keenly encouraged from family and friends.

Beatrice, age 12, said: “We thought long and hard about how best to play our part in the school’s fundraising and agreed we had to do something difficult, something which would stand out and make people take notice.

“One of us will be climbing the stairs to Computing every minute for a total of three hours. We hope this will be enough time to ‘reach the top’!

“This will be a mental as well as physical challenge and we will be cheering each other on to make sure we get there.”

Kirsty Mackenzie, Head at Teesside High School, said: “This challenge demonstrates not only incredible generosity and charitable spirit but excellent teamwork, too. We are excited to see our students’ efforts pay off next week.

“Children in Need Day is always a fantastic occasion at Teesside High School. This year more than ever we hope our school community digs deep to support this outstanding cause.”
