Students reach finals in Talent 2030 National Engineering Competition
Tuesday 12 February 2019 | By Samantha HockneyTwo students at Teesside High School have been praised for their ‘exceptional high quality entry’ in a national Engineering competition.
Abbie and Lexie in Year 10 have been selected for the final judging stage in the Talent 2030 National Engineering Competition for Girls.
The competition invites girls to solve the major challenges of the 21st century, showing how engineering makes a difference to people and the planet.
The girls used their project to explore engineering solutions to modern day problems, designing a bike that can be wired into the mains supply in any home so that families can generate their own electricity. Their aim is to tackle obesity and, significantly, greenhouse gas emissions. As part of the competition, the girls have now been invited to attend the Big Bang Fair at Birmingham’s NEC next month to present their work.
Teesside High School boasts an excellent tradition at the Big Bang Fair. In 2016, then Year 9 pupils Hannah, Gabriella and Jenni were crowned winners of the Application of Science Award at the competition’s regional round at Teesside University. Following their success, they received an invite to present a display at the Principia Schools Conference in York, where they met astronaut Major Tim Peake. They won two national prizes in the competition’s finals.
We have no doubt Abbie and Lexie will represent Teesside High School excellently in their upcoming endeavours. We wish them the very best of luck in the competition.
